Ok, I’m starting to research cleaning up my engine bay. I know I’m going to relocate the battery and I want to move the ECU inside on the firewall somewhere, away from the driver’s side exhaust manifold (Stupid idea, Holden.)

What I really want is to replace and relocate the coolant reservoir. It’s ugly and in my way for future ideas. However I don’t trust the internet mouthbreathers on forums much so I decided I’d ask you mouthbreathers instead.

LS1 5.7L V8. All stock. 2004 GTO. Some people suggest switching to the 05/06 cooling system with a different reservoir and radiator as well as tubing. I think I understand how to do it, however no one explains specfically how it is better or different and it’s pissing me off.

They say something along the lines of this, - “The ‘04 reservoir has to be higher than the radiator. Switch to the 05/06 cooling system and you can put the reservoir wherever.”

WHY? WHY IS THIS DIFFERENT? WHY IS IT SO EASY IF THE COOLING SYSTEM IS DESIGNED FOR AN ENTIRELY DIFFERENT ENGINE?

Is it truly plug and play, swap your fans into an ‘05 shroud and replace the other pieces and done?

Any LS apostles want to chime in and rap some knowledge?

Yellow GTO with a procharger and some sort of cooling black magic for your time.

Just LS swap it?

Wait, shit. Uh, BP swap it? (Miata 1.8 engine)

Well, it’s not really a “completely different engine”.

Doing a quick google search shows the 04 tank needing to be at engine level because of the way it fills.

The 05-06 one looks like it has a long gooseneck that allows the tank to be lower.

Once again, the answer is Miata.

See, I’ve heard this, Provided the fill point is higher than the radiator, I can use literally whatever I want as a reservoir.

True? Not true?

Is the coolant system completely sealed, or is there a hose coming off of your current overflow tank that will puke to the ground if things get too full?

I’ll poke around the small nest of coolant hoses but I believe it is sealed. Never had overheating issues though, which I would like to avoid.
